About Dr. Mowery

Yvonne M. Mowery, MD, PhD, DABR is a physician scientist and Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center/University of Pittsburgh. She is a board-certified radiation oncologist specializing in treating head and neck cancer and skin cancer with radiation therapy. She received her MD and PhD in Pathology from Duke University in 2012, followed by completing Internal Medicine internship and Radiation Oncology residency at Duke in 2017. Before coming to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in June 2023, Dr. Mowery was the Butler Harris Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Duke University and the Associate Center Director for Radioimmunotherapy for the Duke Cancer Institute Center of Cancer Immunotherapy. She enjoys getting to know her patients and their families, and she strives to take a whole-person approach to patient care.

 

Dr. Mowery’s laboratory focuses on understanding head and neck cancer development and mechanisms of overcoming resistance to radiation therapy and immunotherapy in head and neck cancer. She is the radiation oncology PI for SU2C-SARC032 (NCT03092323), a phase II trial evaluating pembrolizumab combined with radiation therapy and surgery for high-risk soft tissue sarcoma of the extremity. She is also the PI of an investigator-initiated phase I trial (NCT04576091) evaluating the ATR inhibitor BAY 1895344 with pembrolizumab and stereotactic body radiation therapy for recurrent head and neck cancer. Her research has been supported through a K08 Career Development Award from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award, U24 through the National Cancer Institute Co-Clinical Imaging Research Resources Program, a Stand Up To Cancer Catalyst grant, and ASCO Young Investigator Award. The overarching goal of the Mowery lab is to translate scientific discoveries from the bench to the bedside to advance the care and improve the quality of life for patients with head and neck cancer.
